Bal Anat - Dance of the Mother Goddess : The Intersection of Paganism and Bellydance in the Modern Era
Limited Capacity seats available

Belly dance is a much loved dance form in Pagan communities. It resonates. What does belly dance mean in Pagan cultural thought, and why? How have historical, Orientalist imagery and romanticized ideas of "primitiveness" come into play in forming Pagan ideas ideas about belly dance? Most importantly how can we minimize harm and potential perpetuation of toxic racialized stereotypes when interacting with belly dance? Is the act of incorporating belly dance into Pagan community inherently harmful in itself or is it a safe and positive form of creative expression for all? In this workshop, I present my undergraduate thesis in which I've explored and critiqued the intersection of belly dance and Paganism in the modern era. Analysis of my original survey research on Pagan belly dance will also be presented. The workshop will conclude with a discussion and Q and A.

Saints, Samhain, and Syncretism: How Being Raised/Culturally Catholic Colors our Pagan Practice and Culture.
Limited Capacity seats available

Were you raised Catholic? Still identify with it in some ways, though now Pagan? Are you married to a Catholic? Raising mixed Pagan/Catholic kids? Have Catholic elements in your practice? This discussion is for you. Anyone who converts to a new or alternative religion brings their cultural and religious past with them; while Catholic may not be who we are anymore, we may still do and think about things in a Catholic-ish way – and that even varies depending on what version of Catholic (Irish, Italian, Mexican, Polish, pre-Vatican 2, post-Vatican 2, etc.) was what informed our worldview at one time. So let’s get together and chat about it. This won’t be a forum to necessarily talk about the tragic scandals plaguing the church, or whether or not you like the pope – this is more reflecting on what of our cultural Catholicism we bring into our Pagan identity and practice (do we all crave fish fry at Lent? Do we all shop at the botanica?), and what we left behind… and what keeps sticking around that non-Catholic Pagans may not understand about us, but we understand about each other.

It can be hard, especially for those of us that use magic, to process our experiences without completely blowing them off, or coming off as being untruthful or unstable.
In this presentation, we'll go over some useful questions to ask yourself about your experiences, learn about effective communication, and talk about how to hold space for yourself that allows you to avoid discrediting your own lived experiences while simultaneously encouraging healthy questioning.

Spiritual boundaries: Salt circles for mental and spiritual wellness
Limited Capacity seats available

Boundaries can be tricky at times, and things can get complicated when we are establishing them in spiritual community. When is it okay to tell your clergy that you don't feel comfortable answering their questions? How much information is too much when you are working with your spirit guides? Is it possible to do ancestor work when your relationship with your ancestors isn't healthy? As an empath, when is it time to get your shields up and stop the emotional input from everyone around you?

We will spend time learning about the basics of spiritual and personal boundaries, then we will use that knowledge to sit in meditation and contemplation on the boundaries we would like to establish. We will finish up by learning about the ways boundaries can be communicated and upheld spiritually to enhance our personal practice and to strengthen our energy work, and will celebrate with a five minute mini-ritual.

In ancient times Bards held a sacred role as lore keepers: poets, tellers of story, singers of song. Through Bardic works, Awen —  divine artistic inspiration — flowed from the Universal life force through Nature and was made manifest in words, visual art, and music. In this way, history and traditions of the tribe were preserved and conveyed. Today’s Druids still recognize the sacred nature of creativity, believing every person has an innate creative potential that can be nurtured and developed. Bardic paths taught in modern Druidry open the mind and spirit to Awen. Join Northern Roots Grove for a relaxing afternoon of Bardic arts and get the Awen flowing!

Feminist Witchcraft for the 21st Century and Beyond
Limited Capacity seats available

Now more than ever, we need a vibrant, political Paganism. As more people explore Feminist Witchcraft as an act of resistance, we need to face the challenges of building a tradition that is intersectional, vibrant, and relevant. This presentation and discussion will explore the ways in which Feminist Witchcraft can reckon with our sometimes problematic history to build a more just future. How do we move beyond the biological essentialism, White Feminism, trans exclusionary ideologies, and cultural appropriation that so often are inherent in our spaces and texts? How do we build a Feminist Craft for the present and the future -- one that is affirming, inclusive, intersectional, actively anti-racist and anti-colonial, and accessible? Participants will be invited to brainstorm ideas, techniques, and strategies for building the next wave of Feminist Witchraft.

We’re here to tell you that isn’t true – and when you study world cultures, you see it never has been. The panel will share their stories of polyaffiliation, and what benefit that brings to not only our community, but to religious thought and practice generally. Beyond the Drawn Circle - How to Work with Ancient Themes and Archetypal Stories to Create Immersive and powerful Ritual.
Limited Capacity seats available

Based on the work Damh and I have been doing for the past twenty years, I will share some of the intense, magical experiences we have had researching for and creating rituals based on classic themes, myths and legends of the British Isles. Using a combination of experimental archeology and enduring shamanic methods as the basis of our approach, we have plumbed the depths of these themes and pushed the boundaries of our own definitions of what ritual can be.
Over the years we have developed many immersive experiences, often for camps involving up to a hundred people. These events are always working with transformational magic and rarely involve standing in a circle or scripts.
This talk is designed to encourage people to break the mould, experiment and dive deeper into the magical themes held in the myths. To work with ancient techniques such as the divinatory tool of the ‘Bull’s Hide Trance’ and find ways to be utterly absorbed into an ancient narratives whilst creating a relevant and deeply magical journey that opens them up to the modern mindset.
I will discuss how over many different camps and gatherings, the process of the community working together to build and burn a ‘Wicker Man’, make and walk a 100ft Fire labyrinth, as well as, invoking and interacting with the characters from the Arthurian tales, the Mabinogi and other legends, has taken us on profound, revelatory and deeply magical journey that has engendered life changing effects on all those involved.

Traditional Kyphi/Kapet Incense
Limited Capacity seats available

Kyphi, or Kapet, is an ancient incense recipe that was made for use in the ancient temples of Amun-Ra. It is an incense made from various herbs, resins, dried fruit, honey, and wine.
The wine, fruit, and honey were mixed together and allowed to sit for lengthy periods of time and then mixed into a thick paste before being mixed with the dry ingredients.
The incense produced is then dried before use. It creates a thick smoke when burned with a very sweet and heady scent.
While many recipes exist, the premise is the same: A beautiful incense dedicated to the Gods.
All materials will be provided for all participants to make their own Kyphi/Kapet.

A small fee of $5-$10 is requested to help offset the costs of the materials.

What’s So Great About the Great Rite?

Ask your average Witch about the great rite and they’ll probably respond with something about cups and athames or sex magick. But the great rite is about more than sexual coupling or half-hearted mini-rites before cakes and ale-the great rite is about the union of powerful forces, and most importantly, it’s for EVERYBODY. From the great rite in truth and in token, this is a workshop about sex in the ancient world, wine, magick, and more! It’s all about what’s so great about one of Wicca’s most misunderstood and divisive rites.

Exploring Sacred Texts
Limited Capacity seats available

In many traditions, learning or interpreting the oral knowledge or sacred texts is a core, profound act of identity, a way of rooting oneself in the grove of the tradition.
Sacred texts can be creeds or belief statements, requirements for membership, deep interpretations of a relationship to mystery, histories and stories, divine messages, or connection points to the values of a community.
As a group we will explore, through discussion and sharing experience, what defines a sacred text, the value of diving into deep study, and ideas and tools for approaching the exploration of sacred texts. We will focus on general definitions and tools, but please feel free to bring your sacred texts if they would help make the discussion concrete for you.
The facilitators of this workshop have been on a small-group journey of deep engagement with a text from one tradition. We will bring our individual and collective experiences, ideas, and perspectives to our facilitation of this discussion, which we hope will be the beginning of an adventure for participants.

Sacrifice Revisited
Limited Capacity seats available

Banned at PSG!
In the ancient world, animal sacrifice was central to much (if not most) public worship. Its absence has, quite frankly, left many of the New Paganisms liturgically hollow.
What was the role of sacrifice in ancient ritual and thought? What, in its various forms—“unbloody,” animal, and even (gasp!) human—is its role, or potential role, today?

Egyptian Trance Dancing
Limited Capacity seats available

This workshop, based on the instructor’s book, Trance Dancing with the Jinn (published by Llewellyn), is a practical overview of traditional Middle Eastern trance dance rituals - Islamic zikr, Sufi whirling and the shamanic zar. This 90 minute class includes history, the science behind what causes trance, a description of Middle Eastern spirits (the Jinn), the music used to call these entities and a ritual to experience them first hand. Come learn Middle Eastern trance dancing from a dancer with over 40 years of performance and teaching experience. PLEASE DO NOT EAT FOR AT LEAST 90 MINUTES BEFORE THE WORKSHOP. Trance dancing can cause nausea on a full stomach.

 The Zar
For centuries women in Africa and the Middle East have used trance dancing to cure physical and mental ailments. Followers of the Zar cult believe their illnesses are caused by "red spirits" – a subspecies of Jinn called the Zar - who use human bodies as hosts. These spirits cause sickness to draw attention to their needs, which must be satisfied before a host can be cured. Dance-induced trances enable humans to communicate with their possessors to discover what the spirits want.

Trance Dancing
Dance therapy has been gaining notoriety for forty years, yet the practice is ancient, perhaps as old as language. Humans have been connecting with the spirit world through dance-induced trances since the dawn of time. Mammoth bone flutes and scapula drums are among man’s oldest artistic artifacts. And many cultures throughout Africa still use their ancestral techniques - for cures, inspiration and divine intervention. The movements are easily learned and extremely effective, often enabling experienced pagans to connect with spirit during their first ritual. I have taught these techniques in Europe, Egypt and the USA (Pantheacon and Lily Dale among other gatherings) and have found that for those with an open mind who enjoy movement and/or percussion it is an excellent communication facilitator.

Druid Magic
Limited Capacity seats available

The mythology of Ireland, Wales and Scotland are filled with spell-casting Druid magicians, but modern Druidry does not always wear that magical tradition on its sleeve. A lifestyle or way of life to some, a spiritual path to others, a religious tradition to others still, the path of the modern Druid ‘magician’ is one that has become shrouded in mist. But to me Druidry, ancient and modern, has magic at its very core. During this talk we will be exploring some of those ancient tales and meeting up close and personal some of the Druid magicians of old. We will then be exploring how magic influences, sometimes imperceptibly, the modern Druid path, and then looking at how Druid magic can be nurtured, learned, and directed in our modern lives.

Clearing the Undergrowth: That Phrase Does Not Mean What You Think It Means
Limited Capacity seats available

What we say isn’t always what we think we’re saying.  Phrases that sneak into our everyday language and our rituals can have meanings we don’t intend.  What we say isn’t necessarily what people hear.
If we are to live with intent, if our words are to be magical, we must be certain we know what we are saying.  Join me as we explore the meanings in three common phrases in the pagan world: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear,” “With free will to all and harm to none,” and “Everything happens for a reason.”  Through these phrases we will discuss the underlying meanings, both intended and not, and how our words can actively sabotage our intent.
If our words are to be magic, let us be certain they create the magic we intend.

This will be a hybrid ritual combining elements of at least ADF, OBOD and RDNA ritual forms. All are welcome to participate or spectate as your comfort level dictates. Let us show you what we value in each of our traditions, how we can work together, and how we honor the divine.

You Are the Future: Queen Up! for Teens

Following a pagan path has its challenges, especially in a rapidly changing society. Yet every crisis brings opportunities. Young people will learn to honor and express the four core energies within themselves and nature as personified by the four Tarot Queens. Each energy, which also corresponds to one of the Magickal Elements, endows us all with specific gifts. We can harness the power of each of these energies for personal growth and transformation.
As a result of this workshop, participants will:
  • Find personal empowerment and understand how their unique gifts can be harnessed to shape the future
  • Gain practical tools to align with the forces of love, abundance, confidence and intuition.
  • Learn which archetypal energy has shaped personality, attitudes and motivation, and discover how to tap in to their latent sources of power to ride life’s changing tides.
All levels are welcome, Tarot experience not necessary.
Participants will learn through discussion, experiential exercise, and guided meditations.

The Gorgon Network
Limited Capacity seats available

The purpose of this workshop is to educate, inform and inspire organizers who put on public events to take steps to proactively protect the community they serve from Sexual predators.

Ultimately, this information is also to raise awareness to attendees of public events as well!

Sexual predators in our community aren’t something that we generally like to think about when putting together gatherings and events. However, as our community is very kind, loving, open and accepting it makes us prime targets for those who would seek to take advantage of those things.

In this workshop we will discuss different ways to help keep our communities safe before, during and after the event.

This workshop is not intended to give all the answers. Each community has different needs and challenges.  I will offer suggestions of places to start but want to inspire groups and leaders to ask the right questions to find solutions to possible situations that may arise.

Motivated and inspired by my own personal experiences that had happened surrounding a non-profit Pagan Networking Group that I ran, I felt called to put together a guide to help those who put on community events.

With that in mind, I have founded the Gorgon Network as a prevention tool to be used to better protect our communities.

The core of everything we discuss will be accessible on www.gorgonnetwork.com I encourage all workshop attendees to use the website as a tool to take the message back to their local communities and spread the message themselves to others who would benefit from it.

Under the Sky Within the Halls: Sacred Space in Kemetic Temples
Limited Capacity seats available

Sacred space within Kemetic temples was designed to connect the physical and non-physical realms within the world for the purpose of ritual and perpetuating ma’at.  Throughout the history of ancient Egypt, grand temples were built and rebuilt time and time again. While elaborate temples in the ancient Egyptian style are built infrequently in the modern age, the need for an ordered space to facilitate this connection is still embraced in multiple traditions for ritual and magical practice.
This session will give a brief overview of the framework and purpose of ancient Egyptian temples.  We will explore application of that framework in regards to creating sacred space for individual and Community practices today.
